Red Tail Borneo Sucker (Gastromyzon ocellatus)
Description:
The Red Tail Borneo Sucker, or Gastromyzon ocellatus, is a uniquely patterned hillstream loach known for its vivid red-orange tail and speckled olive-to-bronze body. Native to the clear, fast-flowing streams of Borneo, this species has evolved to cling to rocks in strong current using its modified pectoral and pelvic fins. It’s a peaceful and algae-grazing fish that thrives in oxygen-rich, river-style aquariums.
Features:
- Brilliant red tail with dotted, camouflaged body pattern
- Ideal for high-flow, oxygenated hillstream biotopes
- Sucker-like fins help them cling to rocks and glass
- Peaceful and active bottom-dweller, often seen grazing algae
Care Instructions:
- Tank Size: Minimum 20 gallons with strong water movement
- Water Parameters: pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard water
- Temperature: 20–25°C (68–77°F)
- Diet: Omnivorous; feed algae wafers, biofilm, blanched vegetables, and small frozen/live foods
- Compatibility: Best kept in groups and with other peaceful fish like rasboras, danios, and loaches
