Algae eating invertebrates are one of the most effective natural solutions for maintaining a clean and balanced freshwater aquarium. Many shrimp and snail species constantly graze on algae, biofilm, and organic debris that accumulate on plants, hardscape, and aquarium glass.
Some of the most popular algae-eating species include Amano shrimp, widely known for their strong algae grazing behavior, and Nerite snails, which are considered among the best algae eating snails for planted aquariums. Certain dwarf shrimp such as Neocaridina shrimp may also help consume soft algae and biofilm in established tanks.
These invertebrates are commonly used in planted aquariums, aquascapes, and nano tanks as part of a natural “clean-up crew.” When combined with proper aquarium maintenance and stable water parameters, algae eating invertebrates can significantly improve the overall balance and appearance of a freshwater tank.
