Catfish and loaches are among the most fascinating bottom-dwelling fish in the freshwater aquarium hobby. Known for their unique behaviours, diverse body shapes, and constant activity along the substrate, these species add both function and personality to planted and community aquariums.
From peaceful schooling loaches to characterful catfish species, these fish often occupy the lower levels of the aquarium where they forage, explore driftwood, and interact with the environment. Many aquarists choose catfish and loaches to complement midwater fish such as tetra species, rasboras, and other small community fish.
Loaches are especially known for their energetic behaviour and playful interactions, while catfish species often develop distinctive personalities and can become long-term centerpiece inhabitants in freshwater aquariums.
Most catfish and loaches prefer aquariums with hiding places such as driftwood, rocks, caves, and dense planting. Soft substrates like sand or smooth gravel allow many species to forage naturally without damaging sensitive barbels or body surfaces.
These bottom dwellers are typically kept alongside peaceful community fish including small tetra species, rasboras, gouramis, and dwarf cichlids. When provided with stable water conditions and a well-structured aquascape, catfish and loaches become highly active and engaging inhabitants.

Fish are gradually adapted to tap water parameters during conditioning so they can transition more smoothly into most home aquariums. This process significantly improves stability and helps ensure customers receive healthy fish that are ready for planted or community aquarium setups.
