Giant Kuhli Loach (Pangio semicincta)
Description:
The Giant Kuhli Loach, Pangio semicincta, is a captivating and larger cousin to the well-known Kuhli Loach. Native to Southeast Asia, this elongated, eel-like fish is prized for its striking appearance, featuring a series of dark bands over a light brown or yellowish body. Its peaceful nature and intriguing behavior make it an excellent addition to community tanks, where it can provide bottom-dwelling activity and natural pest control.
Features:
- Distinctive dark bands over a light brown or yellowish body, resembling the appearance of a banded snake or eel
- Typically grows larger than its Kuhli Loach relatives, reaching lengths of up to 4-5 inches
- Nocturnal habits, becoming more active and visible during the evening or with subdued lighting
- Peaceful and shy, often hiding during the day under aquarium decor or in the substrate
Care Instructions:
- Tank Size: Minimum 30 gallons, to accommodate its larger size and need for swimming space
- Water Parameters: pH 6.0-7.5, soft to moderately hard water
- Temperature: 25-30°C (77-86°F)
- Diet: Omnivorous; requires a varied diet of sinking pellets, flakes, and live/frozen foods like worms and small crustaceans
- Compatibility: Best kept with other peaceful community fish; enjoys the company of its own kind and should ideally be kept in small groups
