Lake Malawi cichlids are best kept in aquariums planned specifically for African cichlids, with stable mineral-rich water, strong filtration, adequate swimming space, and rockwork or territory breaks appropriate to the species. Peacock and Hap cichlids are often chosen for open-water colour display, while Mbuna are more closely associated with rocky habitat and stronger territorial behaviour.

Natural Colour, Carefully Conditioned Fish

Mature male Lake Malawi cichlids can show extraordinary blue, yellow, orange, and red coloration when healthy and properly housed. At Topick Aquarium, the colour you see is genuine natural or selectively bred colour expression supported by proper conditioning and feeding. We do not use hormones to artificially force or intensify colour.

All Lake Malawi cichlids at Topick Aquarium are carefully quarantined and conditioned to our stable local tap water before sale. While African cichlids should still be kept in a properly planned setup, this conditioning helps fish transition more smoothly into stable home aquariums in Canada.
