10 Most Recommended Beginner Aquarium Fish in Canada

10 Most Recommended Beginner Aquarium Fish in Canada

Choosing the right fish is the most important step when starting a freshwater aquarium. Many beginners worry too much about water parameters, complicated products, or expensive equipment, while the real key is simply selecting hardy, adaptable species.

At Topick Aquarium in Canada, we help new aquarists start successful tanks every day. Based on real customer experience and long-term observation, here are 10 beginner-friendly freshwater fish that perform extremely well in Canadian home aquariums.

Ranking is not in any particular order. The recommended numbers below do not include algae eaters, shrimp, or cleanup crew species. You can always add a few of those later.

Important tip: we strongly recommend using an aquarium heater even for easy fish species. It does not mean you need very high temperatures, but stable temperature greatly reduces fish stress and disease. Most tropical fish thrive in stable conditions.

1. Fruit Tetra
Fruit color tetra - livestock

Fruit Tetras are one of the easiest fish for beginners in Canada. Their bright colors and medium size make them perfect for filling an aquarium without requiring a huge group.

  • Recommended density: about 1 fish per gallon
  • Very adaptable to tap water
  • Minimal water parameter requirements (as long as the tank is properly cycled)
  • Can become mildly territorial if the group is too small

We recommend keeping Fruit Tetras as the main species in a tank. Even though they can show some mild aggression, they behave much better when kept in a proper group size.

2. Guppies, Mollies & Platies (Livebearers)

Red tail platinum elephant ear guppy - pair - livestock

These are some of the most famous beginner aquarium fish. Guppies, mollies, and platies are colorful, easy to keep alive, and often breed in the aquarium.

However, they are sometimes misunderstood. While they are easy to keep alive, they are not always easy to keep long-term.

Because they are heavily captive-bred, some farms use antibiotics during production. As a result, these fish may carry more bacteria compared to other species and can be sensitive when mixed with new fish.

Their typical lifespan is around 1–2 years.

Recommendations:

  • Buy from reputable aquarium stores
  • Make sure the fish are active and eating in the seller’s tank
  • Systems with one tank per system greatly reduce disease risks

3. Neon Tetra / Cardinal Tetra (Highly Recommended)

Cardinal tetra - livestock

Neon tetras and cardinal tetras are classic beginner schooling fish. Many older aquarium articles suggest they require very soft or acidic water, which often worries beginners unnecessarily.

In reality, most modern neon and cardinal tetras are captive bred and well adapted to tap water. When properly quarantined and introduced into a cycled aquarium, they are very reliable fish.

  • Peaceful schooling fish
  • Longer lifespan compared to many beginner species
  • Different tetra species can often be mixed together
  • Low aggression and generally low disease risk

The key factor is not chasing perfect pH numbers, but making sure the fish come from a properly quarantined system.

4. Odessa Barb (Highly Recommended)

Odessa barb - livestock

Although barbs often have a reputation for being aggressive, the Odessa barb is an exception.

Male Odessa barbs develop a beautiful red stripe along the body and are extremely active swimmers.

  • Peaceful compared with most barbs
  • Very temperature tolerant
  • Active but not chaotic
  • Mixes well with many other fish

Because of their activity and coloration, Odessa barbs are an excellent fish to add life and movement to a beginner aquarium.

5. Boesemani Rainbowfish

Bosemani rainbowfish - livestock

Boesemani rainbowfish are larger, colorful schooling fish with striking blue and yellow bodies.

  • Peaceful but energetic
  • Medium to large size makes them visually impressive
  • Great for filling larger aquariums

You may occasionally see them chasing each other, but this is usually normal social behavior rather than aggression.

Their color and movement make them a fantastic centerpiece for beginner aquariums in Canada.

6. Roseline Shark (Highly Recommended)

Denison barb (roseline shark) - single fish (~7cm)

Roseline sharks (also known as Denison barbs) are one of the most impressive peaceful fish available.

They feature a distinctive red stripe across the head and develop beautiful green coloration as they mature.

  • Extremely fast swimmers
  • Schooling fish
  • Recommended tank size: 25 gallons or larger
  • Best kept in groups of 3 or more

These fish mix surprisingly well with many species, including:

  • small tetras
  • angelfish
  • discus
  • larger community fish

Because of their speed and size, they are rarely bullied and remain a low-stress species for community tanks.

7. Betta Fish

Half moon betta - livestock

Betta fish are extremely popular beginner fish, but many articles suggest they must always live alone. In reality, they can coexist with other fish under the right conditions.

Requirements for community betta tanks:

  • The tank should already have other fish before adding the betta
  • Avoid fin-nipping species
  • Do not keep two male bettas together
  • Avoid keeping them with small shrimp

For beginners who want to keep a betta without setting up a separate tank, a carefully planned community aquarium can work well.

8. Rainbow Shiner

Rainbow shiner

Rainbow shiners are unique fish that develop stunning metallic purple coloration when mature.

  • Prefer groups of 6 or more
  • Very temperature tolerant
  • Hardy and adaptable

Juveniles may appear plain at first, but as they mature, their coloration becomes extremely impressive.

9. Ricefish

Mixed ricefish - livestock

Ricefish are another excellent beginner species that are easy to maintain and often breed in aquariums.

  • Low maintenance
  • Temperature tolerant
  • Frequently bred in natural-style aquariums

They are often viewed from above in natural tanks, which reflects how they were originally developed.

10. White Cloud Mountain Minnow

White cloud mountain minnow - livestock

White cloud mountain minnows are one of the most underrated beginner aquarium fish.

  • Hardy and adaptable
  • Temperature tolerant
  • Often breed in aquariums
  • Low maintenance

Their subtle colors and schooling behavior make them a beautiful addition to many community tanks.

Final Thoughts: Choosing the Right Beginner Fish

The most important factor for a successful aquarium is not chasing perfect water numbers, but creating a stable, properly cycled environment with healthy fish from reliable sources.

Many of the species listed above adapt extremely well to Canadian tap water and typical home aquariums.

If you are unsure which fish are right for your aquarium, you can always bring photos of your tank and speak with experienced aquarists for advice.
