Spotted Hatchetfish (Gasteropelecus maculatus)

Description:

The Spotted Hatchetfish, Gasteropelecus maculatus, is a distinctive and fascinating freshwater fish known for its unique body shape and striking spotted pattern. Native to South America's slow-moving waters, this species spends much of its time near the water's surface, where its hatchet-shaped body aids in its ability to make short gliding jumps out of the water to escape predators or catch prey.

Features:

  • Unique, hatchet-shaped body with a silver base and dark spots
  • Peaceful and schooling fish, creating a mesmerizing display in groups
  • Surface dweller, often seen swimming near the top of the tank
  • Capable of gliding jumps out of the water, requiring a well-secured tank lid

Care Instructions:

  • Tank Size: Minimum 20 gallons, with a spacious open surface area for swimming
  • Water Parameters: pH 6.0-7.5, soft to moderately hard water
  • Temperature: 24-28°C (75-82°F)
  • Diet: Omnivorous; a balanced diet of high-quality flakes, small pellets, and live/frozen foods like brine shrimp and daphnia
  • Compatibility: Best kept in groups with other peaceful community fish
