Schizolecis guntheri
Description:
Schizolecis guntheri is a small, lesser-known South American loricariid catfish native to clear, fast-flowing streams of southeastern Brazil. Often compared to Otocinclus in size and behavior, this species is appreciated for its subtle beauty, peaceful temperament, and excellent algae-grazing habits. Its slender body and understated pattern make it a perfect fit for naturalistic, planted, or river-style aquariums.
Features:
- Small and streamlined loricariid, similar in size to Otocinclus
- Excellent grazer of soft algae and biofilm
- Peaceful and shy—ideal for calm community tanks
- Rarely seen in the hobby, appealing to collectors of uncommon catfish
Care Instructions:
- Tank Size: Minimum 15–20 gallons with good filtration and oxygenation
- Water Parameters: pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard water
- Temperature: 20–26°C (68–79°F)
- Diet: Herbivorous-leaning omnivore; feeds on algae, biofilm, algae wafers, blanched vegetables, and occasional protein foods
- Compatibility: Excellent with other peaceful fish such as small tetras, rasboras, and dwarf corydoras; avoid aggressive tankmates
